The Hon. Margaret Fairweather

Margaret was born in 1902, the daughter of the Rt. Hon. Walter Runciman, 1st Viscount Runciman of Doxford, and of the Viscountess Runciman née Stevenson, of Doxford, Northumberland. Like her husband Douglas her passion was flying. Prior to the outbreak of war in 1939 she had marked up 1000 flying hours. Like Douglas, she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary and was one of the first women to fly a Spitfire. Margaret was killed on 4 August 1944 when attempting an emergency landing in a Proctor. She was 42 years of age and is buried in Dunure Cemetery, Ayrshire beside her husband.
