William Smith was born in 1914, son of John and Jessie Smith of Newton Mearns, and married Mary Hutton McAdam in Newton Mearns in 1940. He was aged 30 when he died in Italy on 18 May 1944 defending the shoreline near the Sangro River against the retreating German soldiers on the Winter Line.

William is buried in Sangro River War Cemetery which is sited on a hillside near Torino di Sangro in the Province of Chieti, Italy and is also commemorated on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
