George Shepherd was born in 1919. He joined the Royal Navy and served aboard HMS Arbutus (K 86), a Corvette, which was escorting the convoy ON-63 about 295 miles west of Erris Head, Ireland. At 22:36 hours on 5 February 1942, U-136, captained by Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Zimmermann, fired a spread of three torpedoes. The corvette was hit by one torpedo and sank immediately after breaking in two. The commander Lieutenant A.L.W. Warren, DSC, RNR, 3 officers and 39 ratings were lost. George was 23 years of age and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 56 -1 and on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
