Donald Norden was born in the Plantation area of Glasgow in 1912, son of Neilson and Jessie Norden who had married in Newton Mearns in 1909.
He served with the Royal Engineers and was involved in the Battle of Crete and the withdrawal of British troops in the face of the advance by German forces. He died on the final day of the withdrawal when the Royal Engineers were deployed to cause as much damage as possible to slow the German advance and allow the Royal Navy to evacuate the troops. Donald was killed on 1 June 1941, aged 29, and is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 4.
