James More was born in Glasgow in 1916, son of Thomas George More, a stockbroker, and Magdalene Henderson More. He was a student at Glasgow University from 1934 to 1938, graduating with an Arts degree. In 1944 he married Dorothy Patricia Rosalind Lofting, of Sherwood, Nottingham in Glasgow.

James was killed in the Netherlands on 21 January 1945, aged 29 and is buried in Sittard War Cemetery - Grave reference E. 8. He is commemorated on the War Memorials of Eastwood and Royal Troon Golf Clubs.

In the probate of his estate his home address is given as The Ridge, South Hillhead, Newton Mearns and it was in favour of his wife Dorothy Patricia Rosalind Lofting of Sherwood, Nottingham.
