Andrew Hamilton was born in Newton Mearns in 1902, the son of Andrew Hamilton, a joiner at the bleachfield, and his wife Elizabeth. His father served in the First World War and died of nephritis in Rawalpindi on 11 January 1918, aged 39 (see p.18). He is buried in Rawalpindi War Cemetery - Grave reference 4. A. 29.

Andrew junior grew up in Mearns and worked as a van driver. On 17 July 1925 he married Annie Richardson in Neilston and they lived in Main Street, Newton Mearns. He was killed in France in the France & Belgium Campaign, between 10th and 23 June 1940, aged 38, and is buried in Ardres Communal Cemetery near Calais - Grave no 14. He is also commemorated on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
