Thomas was born in Newton Mearns in 1889, son of Thomas and Agnes Semple. Thomas snr. was born in Whifflet, Coatbridge in 1862 and married Agnes Mair in Eastwood in 1885 at which time he was a farm servant at Balgray Farm, Newton Mearns. The family later moved to Blackhall Farm, Paisley where Thomas’s father was a groom. Thomas married Martha Finnie in Kilwinning in 1914 and lived at 7 Kirkgate, Irvine, Ayrshire.

Thomas died of Influenza in France on 25 November 1918, aged 29 and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine Maritime, France - Grave reference S. II. CC. 10.
