Lewis was born in Barony, Glasgow in 1882. His father was Donald McDonald who was employed as a joiner and his mother was Catherine Cross from Alvie, Inverness-shire. Lewis married Elizabeth Clara Bell in 1909 in Maryhill and they later lived in Newton Mearns. In the military records Lewis's occupation on enlistment is recorded as a labourer.
Lewis was killed in Belgium on 9 November 1914, aged 32 and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium - Panel 5.

His Medal Card shows that his family received three medals, the 1914 Star, the Victory Medal, and the British War Medal (Victory & British War Medals were struck on both sides).
