David was born in Newton Mearns in 1890, elder son of John and Jeanie Young. John, his father, born in Eaglesham in 1870 was employed as a carter. From 1891, the family lived at Bringan’s Land, Main Street, Newton Mearns. In the 1911 census David was living with his parents and his occupation is listed as a grocery van man.

David was killed at the battle of Loos, France on 26 September 1915, aged 25 and is commemorated on Loos Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France - Panel 46 to 49 and on Newton Mearns Parish Church War Memorial.
