John was born in Newton Mearns in 1894, eldest son of Thomas and Jeanie Robertson of Tofts Works, Newton Mearns. John's father was born in Eaglesham in 1853 and was a starch maker at Tofts bleachworks. His mother was born in Howwood in 1858 and died in Newton Mearns in 1910.

In the 1911 census John was living with his father and his occupation was listed as a grocer with the local Co-operative Society.

John was killed in France on 5 November 1918, aged 24, and he is buried in Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, North France - Grave reference I. C. 25 and is also commemorated on Newton Mearns Parish Church War Memorial.
