James was born in Newton Mearns in 1888, son of John and Margaret Grant Reid. James's father had been brought up in Mearns and his mother came from Beith in Ayrshire. They married in 1894 and initially farmed at Walton Farm but by 1911 were at Langrig farm.
James was killed in France on 20 August 1918, aged 29. He is buried in Mont-Bernanchon British Cemetery, Gonnehem, Pas-de-Calais, France.
