William was born in Newton Mearns in 1898, son of Hugh and Marion Raeside of Langrig Farm, Newton Mearns. After leaving school he worked on the farm.

William was killed in France on 16 April 1918, aged 20, and is buried in Aire Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France - Grave reference IV. F. 12 and is also commemorated on the family gravestone in Mearns cemetery and on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial. (see also Neil McLellan).
