Unit: 4th Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade
Rank: Rifleman
Service Number: 23/2243

John, brother of Neil, was born in Newton Mearns in 1894, son of Neil and Marion Keith McLellan. John's father was born in Campsie and his mother was born in Jura. It is likely that she had come to Campsie to work in the print mills. In 1901 they lived in Campsie where his father was employed as a labourer, but by 1911 they were living in Newton Mearns at Gateside, Old Mearns Road. His father was employed as a roadman, but John was not living with the family. John emigrated in 1913 aged 19, sailing on the SS Commonwealth to Melbourne, Australia and then on to New Zealand on 24 December 1914. His occupation there before enlistment was as a farmer at Grey Lynn.

John was killed at the Somme, France on 15 September 1916, aged 22 and is commemorated on Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, New Zealand War Dead site and on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
