Matthew was born in Newton Mearns in 1880, son of Patrick and Annie McDonald of Newton Mearns who came originally from Ireland. In 1901 Matthew's father was a quarry worker. In 1901 the family lived in Scott’s Land, Newton Mearns and Matthew was employed as a shop assistant. By 1911, Matthew's father had died, and he was living with his mother, brother and sister at 7 Kirk Lane, Newton Mearns. His occupation was listed as a boot and shoe warehouseman.

Matthew was killed in Belgium on 26 August 1917, aged 37 and is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium - Grave reference II. A. 12.
