World War 1 (1914 - 1918)

John McCabe

John was born in Newton Mearns 27 August 1899, son of Hugh and Margaret McCabe, 49 Barrhead Road, Newton Mearns. The 1911 Census shows that Hugh was a roadman working for the County Council and had been married for 24 years. John was at school along with his five siblings. The only reference found to his death is the inscription on the family gravestone in Mearns Cemetery which states: ‘Killed in France 1918’.

While researching John’s history it was discovered that the records relating to his death have been confused with another soldier with the same name from Peebles. Despite considerable research, it has not been possible to discover in which regiment John served, when and where he died or the circumstances of his death.
