John was born in 1899 in Kirkinner, Dumfries and Galloway, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Lang. His mother died in 1907 and in 1908, his father remarried Annie Hare. In the 1911 census the family was living at Fingalton Mill, Newton Mearns. John's father is listed as a grain miller but when he died in February 1917, his occupation was given as retired fruiterer.

John was killed in France on 20 July 1918, aged 19 and is buried in Marfaux Cemetery, Marne, France - Grave reference II. A. 10 and is also commemorated on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
