John was born 1893 in Mauchline, Ayrshire, son of James and Marion Kirkland. John's family originated in Ayrshire where his father was born in Cumnock and his mother in Auchinleck. John's father died in 1907 and his mother moved to Newton Mearns. In the 1911 census John's occupation was recorded as a horseman when he was living in the grieve’s house [head -workman’s house] at Netherton Farm. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1913.

John was killed in France on 15 June 1917, aged 24 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France - Grave reference   XXII. K. 22 and is also commemorated on the New Zealand War Dead site.
