Robert was born in Newton Mearns in 1894, son of Robert and Marion Harper. The family lived at Pollok's Land and Robert's father was employed as a roadman. In the 1911 census, Robert was living with his parents at Malletsheugh and his occupation was listed as a bleachfield worker.

Robert was killed at the Somme, France on 15 September 1916, aged 22 and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France - Pier and Face 6D and 7D and on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.
