Andrew, brother of George and Thomas, was born in Newton Mearns in 1878, the eldest son of Andrew and Mary Hamilton. His father was a starch maker at the bleachfield. The family lived at Low Row Netherplace, the site of the bleachworks. Andrew’s father died in 1907. Andrew junior married Elizabeth McGredy in 1900 and in the 1911 census he was living at 35 Main Street, Newton Mearns with his wife and six children. His occupation was listed as a joiner at a bleachfield.

Andrew died of nephritis in Rawalpindi* on 11 January 1918, aged 39 and is buried in Rawalpindi War Cemetery - Grave reference 4. A. 29 and is also commemorated on Mearns Parish Kirk War Memorial.


 *Rawalpindi is near Islamabad in what is now northern Pakistan, south of the ‘North West Frontier’.
