Daniel was born in Newton Mearns in 1887, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Ferrie. Daniel's father died in 1886 before he was born. He, his mother and sister Margaret lived with his grandmother Bridget Murray in Main Street, Newton Mearns. In the 1911 census his occupation was recorded as a lace and muslin finisher at a bleachfield (Netherplace). He is listed as a boarder with Mary Dawson, 48 Main Street, Newton Mearns and married her daughter Annie Dawson in 1914. Their daughter Mary was born in 1915 when they lived at 52 Main Street, Newton Mearns.

Daniel was killed on 20 May 1917 in France, aged 30 and is buried in Fosse No.10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-En-Gohelle, Pas-de-Calais, France - Grave reference I. C. 6. He is commemorated on The Roll of Honour for Wallace & Co. Netherplace Ltd. (bottom left column on photo). The Roll of Honour is now in the care of East Renfrewshire Culture & Leisure.
