John, brother of Thomas, was born in Newton Mearns in 1879, the son of Michael and Bridget Connelly. The family originally lived in Church Lane but by 1901 was living in Wellmeadow Row at Tofts.  Before enlisting, John was employed as a clerk.

John was killed in France on 26 September 1915, aged 36 and is buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France - Grave reference IV. B. 47.
