John was born in Barony, Glasgow in 1888, the eldest son of William and Janet Bryson. His father William was born in Mearns where he was employed as a tailor, living with his parents, initially in Russell's Land and then in Wellmeadow Row.

In 1884 he married Janet Hamilton of Eaglesham and they settled in Glasgow but moved to Mearns where John attended school. At the time of John's death, the family lived in Paisley. John died in Basra, Persian Gulf of meningitis on 9th September 1917, aged 30 and is buried in Basra War Cemetery - Grave reference I. B. 12.
