The earliest castles in Mearns were wooden and it is believed that one was sited at Kirkhill and one at Robshill. No trace is to be found of these castles and the evidence of their existence is to be found only in folk lore.
Similarly there is little evidence of later stone castles, which local feudal lords would have built on their land. Two castles, however, survived into the latter part of the twentieth century and one is still standing today.
Pollok Castle
Pollok Castle stood in the area previously known as Upper Pollok . Records show that there was a stone built castle there from the 17th century with possibly a wooden structure before that. The last building on the site was demolished in 1954.
Mearns Castle
Mearns Castle, built in 1449, still stands today in the area previously known as the Aldton. Sadly, the fabric of the building has deteriorated over recent years and it is now in a dangerous state.
